The summer travel season is upon us and that means it's time to get your vehicle ready for long-distance travel. But this year you'll have more on your mind than vehicle reliability, safety or performance. With higher fuel prices on the horizon, it's a good idea to get the most out of every litre of gas.

Maximize Your Fuel Economy

Boost efficiency by inspecting these vital items. They're crucial for maximizing fuel economy and improving overall performance

Air Filters

Changing the air filter on a regular basis can improve mileage by up to 10 percent and increase engine life. Mopar air filters are designed to achieve high, virtually unrestricted air flow while maintaining filtration levels critical to ensure long engine life.

Spark Plugs

As spark plugs age, they become pitted and the gap often shifts out of O.E. spec. In addition, carbon deposits can foul electrodes and insulators can split. The result is inefficient combustion, poor performance and decreased fuel mileage.

PCV Valve

A malfunctioning PCV valve or clogged system can result in drivability problems, poor engine idle and increased fuel consumption. Replace the PCV valve at recommended intervals.

O2 Sensors

Located in the exhaust path, the O2 sensor's function is to feed data to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The goal of the sensor is to reduce emissions and help the engine run as efficiently as possible. Replacing a faulty O2 sensor can improve mileage by up to an astonishing 40 percent!

EGR Valves 

 EGR valves, primarily an emissions system component, can affect fuel mileage as well. If the valve is stuck open, it can create a vacuum leak that leads to rough idle and hesitation. If the valve is stuck closed, it can cause combustion temperatures to rise and lead to detonation. Neither condition is conducive to good fuel economy.

Fuel Filters

Today's gasoline quality surpasses past standards, yet a vital fuel filter remains crucial, trapping contaminants pre-engine contact. Mopar filters excel, maximizing dirt retention with perks like an internally lubricated seal gasket, enhancing torque, anti-drain back valve, adhesive-filled double lock seam, and an easily removable fluted case. Additionally, for diesel, Mopar's 5.9L and 6.7L filters shield injector pumps and injectors by capturing water, averting contamination.

Engine Oil/Oil Filters

 Engine oil filters suspend dirt, metal particles and sludge, allowing only clean oil to circulate through the engine. Clean oil also contributes to better fuel economy. Tune-Up Parts

 Even in today's advanced vehicles, a good old tune up, which includes many of the parts listed above, works wonders at improving fuel economy.

Tires

Tires that are underinflated by just two pounds per square inch (psi) can adversely affect fuel economy. Check air pressure in all tires, including the spare and inspect tread and sidewall areas for uneven or irregular wear - always a good indicator of how the vehicle's suspension is performing.

Shocks & Struts

Shocks and struts are the most overlooked service parts on a vehicle, but they affect ride control and comfort and can also affect a number of related parts. Use only Mopar shocks and struts to optimize vehicle handling, tire life and to keep your vehicle riding smoothly.

Engine Belts & Hoses

In today's vehicles, a single drive belt provides power to many engine components, and hoses carry vital fluids under high pressure. Prevent a breakdown or serious engine damage by replacing belts and hoses at recommended intervals. Battery

Whether it's the first start-up in the morning or having the reserve power to run accessories when the engine/alternator is not on, the battery is the critical source. Corroded terminals and a bulging or cracked case are signs that a battery has been subject to extreme conditions. And each battery has a limited "life" to it. Test the battery and replace it if necessary to make sure there is adequate cranking power to start the vehicle.

Brakes

The key is to replace the pads/shoes before the rotors/drums become damaged. Pads, shoes, rotors, drums, calipers, fittings, brake hardware and parking brake should be inspected. If you hear your brakes squealing, it may be time for replacements.

Wiper Blades

Fluid Levels

Cabin air filters keep airborne contaminants and irritants out of the vehicle's cabin.
